Counselling & How it works

How counselling works

From time to time, everyone goes through difficulties and may not even know why. Some people find the added support of working with a therapeutic professional makes the journey more bearable. At the end, people may develop greater self-awareness and be glad they took the journey. Counselling can be hard work but it can also be very rewarding and help you get more fulfillment from life.

Typically, a client comes for 50 minutes every week to meet with the therapist about concerns and issues in their life. They may also discuss success, progress, and things they feel good about. It is a safe, confidential space to explore things that the client may find hard to discuss with friends and family or just doesn't have the opportunity to.

There are many different schools of psychotherapy and counselling but research strongly suggests that the relationship you have with your counsellor is the biggest impact on its success and not the school of thought your counsellor belongs to.

How I Work

I am trained as a Humanistic Integrative Counsellor, as well as being a Registered and Accredited member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I adhere to the BACP ethical framework and strongly believe in the importance of the working relationship between the client and counsellor.

For me, each client is a distinct individual. Each client needs to be met and supported on their own terms and based on their own needs. Building a trusting and valuable rapport matters much more than theory.

We will start with an assessment session. Then, if we choose to go forward, we'll meet every week for 50 minutes with periodic reviews of our work. After the first session, we'll decide together on how many sessions to start with. This can be re-assessed if you decide you would like to continue. It will depend on your individual needs whether it is long term or short term work.

I typically charge £60 for a 50 minute session.
